First Tattoo? Booking, Prep & What to Expect

By Mara Voss · March 4, 2025 · 6 min read

Everyone in our chairs was a first-timer once — including every artist on staff. Here's the whole journey, step by step, so you can walk in relaxed instead of Googling “does it hurt” at 2am.

1. The consultation is just a conversation

Bring references, a sketch or a vague idea. We'll talk placement, size, style and budget, match you with the right artist and give you a flat quote or hourly estimate. It's free, there's no pressure, and most quotes land within a day.

2. Prepare like it's a good day out

Sleep well, eat a real meal, hydrate and skip alcohol for 24 hours. Wear something that gives easy access to the placement, bring a sugary snack, and shave the area lightly the night before if you like — though we'll handle it either way.

3. The session itself

You'll approve the stencil on your skin before anything is permanent. Most people describe the feeling as a scratchy vibration — uncomfortable in bony spots, totally manageable elsewhere. Small pieces take under an hour; bring headphones and breathe normally.

“I spent weeks nervous about my first tattoo. The consult answered everything, the session felt easy, and I booked my second piece before the first one healed.” — Priya, first-time client

4. Healing starts the same day

You'll leave with a second-skin wrap, a written healing plan and an aftercare kit. Follow it, send us photos at two weeks, and come back for a free check-in. Read our full healing timeline so you know what's normal.
