The Healing Timeline: Your Tattoo Week by Week
By Jonah Reyes · February 18, 2025 · 5 min read
Healing is the second half of every tattoo — and the part most people overthink. Here's what your skin will do each week, what's completely normal, and when to actually call us.
Days 1–3: sore, shiny, wrapped
Your tattoo feels like sunburn and may weep a little plasma under the second skin — that's your body doing its job. Keep the wrap on as directed, sleep in clean sheets, and don't touch it with unwashed hands.
Days 4–14: peeling and itching
Flaking, peeling and itching mean healing is on track. Wash gently with fragrance-free soap, moisturize in thin layers, and whatever you do — don't pick. No soaking, no gym sweat, no sun.
Weeks 3–4: the cloudy phase
Your tattoo may look dull or milky as a fresh skin layer forms over the ink. This freaks out more clients than anything else, and it always clears. Keep moisturizing and stay out of the sun.
“Week three had me convinced something was wrong. One photo to the studio and they talked me down in minutes — by week six it was the sharpest tattoo I own.” — Marcus, sleeve client
Weeks 5–6: settled and sharp
